Our volunteers asked for continued learning opportunities on anti-racism and anti-oppression, and we heard you! Join us as we learn together about ways that racism, sexism, classism, xenophobia, and capitalism intersect for workers in our food system, and discuss how we can work together to build power with them. There will be 20 minutes of short films followed by a facilitated discussion with Solid Ground volunteers and staff. We’d love to have you there!
At Solid Ground we believe that healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food is a human right, but who is behind our food system? Food workers are subjected to low wages, few opportunities for advancement, widespread exploitation and injustice, including wage theft, pesticide exposure and poisoning, child labor, long work hours with few breaks, racial and ethnic discrimination, unsafe working conditions, sexual harassment, and lack of access to health benefits. Women and workers of color are especially vulnerable, and undocumented immigrants are often unable to speak up due to fear of deportation.
While bringing food to customers’ tables, many food workers can’t afford safe and nutritious food for themselves and their families, with many food workers relying on SNAP (food stamps) to feed themselves and their families.
It’s no exaggeration to say that the food system as it currently functions does not work for food workers. However, we believe that our food system is not broken – it is functioning exactly as designed. At Solid Ground, we know that racism and other oppressions are root causes of poverty intentionally baked into the food system. Join us as we dive deep into these discussions and align in solidarity with food workers.
Solid Ground is following Public Health recommendations, including social distancing, so this will be live virtual event via Zoom. Register for the event for Zoom details.
