Decreased Latinx presence at Tenant Education Workshops

Solid Ground’s Tenant Education Workshops are classes which serve to communicate practical and valuable tenancy information to renters. They help tenants understand their rights and responsibilities under state law. Unfortunately, the current political climate seems to be keeping some communities from accessing this vital information.

These two types of classes, “Rent Smart” and “Spend Smart & Rent Smart,” are available in both Spanish and English. But since February of this year, counselor Arturo Velasquez has noticed fewer Spanish speakers and members of the Latinx community attending classes. He attributes decreased numbers to the political atmosphere and an increase in hate speech targeted at minorities and immigrants.

“I had a Spanish workshop at the Beacon Hill Library, and I was talking to two of the gentlemen from Mexico. One of them was saying to me that a lot of Latinos are afraid to be out in groups now because of the climate,” Arturo said.

And he isn’t the only one who has noticed this trend. “I’ve been contacted by librarians who for years have been arranging workshops or information classes … and they asked if we could modify the workshop from presentation in a classroom setting to one on one.”

 

Cada vez menos latinos asisten a talleres educativos para inquilinos

Solid Ground ofrece talleres educativos para impartir información práctica y útil para inquilinos. En estos talleres, los inquilinos aprenden acerca de sus derechos y responsabilidades de acuerdo a la ley. Desafortunadamente, debido al actual clima político, parece que ciertas comunidades ya no están aprovechando esta información importante.

Estas dos clases, “Compradores Inteligentes” e “Inquilinos Inteligentes, Compradores Inteligentes,” se dan en español y en inglés. Sin embargo, desde febrero de este año, el consejero Arturo Velásquez ha notado que cada vez menos personas que hablan español y miembros de las comunidades latinas están asistiendo a las clases. Arturo considera que esta reducción se debe a la situación política y un aumento en el discurso de odio dirigido contra minorías e inmigrantes.

“Cuando di un taller en español en la biblioteca de Beacon Hill, estuve hablando con dos señores de México, y uno de ellos me comentaba que muchos latinos tienen miedo de salir en grupos ahora debido al clima político,” explica Arturo.

No es el único que se ha percatado de esta tendencia. “Algunos de los bibliotecarios que llevan años organizando talleres u otras clases informativas me han preguntado últimamente si podíamos cambiar los talleres del formato de una presentación en un salón de clase a sesiones individuales.”
