About SHIBA
The Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) provides free, unbiased, and confidential education and advice to King County residents on their Medicare healthcare options. Solid Ground is King County, Washington’s SHIBA sponsor in partnership with the Washington state Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
SHIBA volunteers work to empower, educate, and assist Medicare-eligible people, their families, and caregivers through objective outreach, counseling, and training to make informed health insurance decisions that optimize access to care and benefits. SHIBA volunteers work to educate and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, error and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education.
About the SHIBA Technology Support Volunteer
The SHIBA Technology Support volunteer will teach other remote volunteers how to use basic computer skills and Microsoft products in both a group and one-on-one basis. Volunteers will work alongside other volunteers and the SHIBA Coordinator to develop a basic computer skill curriculum and lesson plans, primarily geared toward helping volunteers, aged 55+, to increase their computer literacy.
Time Commitment
Volunteers are encouraged to commit a minimum of 5 hours per month, preferably at least one 1-2 hour time slot per week.
Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- Willingness and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and of all ages
- Ability to work with older adults (aged 55+)
- Patience with others and ability to problem-solve easy tech issues
- Ability to teach other volunteers basic use of Microsoft Outlook and Teams
- Good knowledge of and ability to teach others basic computer skills like using the internet to research, using video conferencing applications like Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and setting up a Google Voice number
