Sand Point Family Housing is a transitional housing program for homeless families, located on the former Sand Point Naval Base. The goal of the program is to provide a supportive, safe and empowering environment to help families get back on their feet. The Children’s Group Specialist will facilitate groups for children ages 0-18 (primarily children under 12) at the Sand Point Childcare center on weekday evenings.
Essential Responsibilities, Duties & Tasks
50% Facilitate groups for children 0-18 under safe ratio guidelines, dependent upon age group and with the assistance of volunteers. Review the child care calendar to learn which age group will be in the center that day, plan the daily group routines (such as art and craft projects, providing assistance with homework) and ensure the children are aware of and follow the behavior expectations. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities as needed. Take the lead to ensure a safe, positive environment for all children.
25% Create curriculum, coordinate and facilitate developmentally appropriate support and recreational groups for children and parents in a safe and positive environment. Help develop and implement effective services for children, youth and mothers that address the impact of homelessness, domestic violence, racism and poverty, child abuse and substance abuse prevention, focusing on child development, positive parenting and self-esteem enhancement.
10% Responsible for daily set up and clean up and preparing and serving snacks. Take the lead in keeping a regular cleaning schedule to maintain the Sand Point Childcare room in safe and sanitary condition.
5% Provide direction and task supervision of volunteers under guidance of Program Manager. Communicate openly with parents, volunteers and housing staff.
5% Adhere to Sand Point Housing Program and Solid Ground policies and procedures. Complete a criminal background check and CPR/First Aid training, and other training as needed.
5% Maintain appropriate records and adhere to documentation standards.
