If you are having trouble with the state Department of Social and Human Services concerning receiving or keeping your benefits, the Family Assistance Program (Welfare Advocacy) can help.

Family Assistance provides information and referral, advice and direct legal representation to individuals who have had their state public assistance benefits (e.g., food stamps, Medicaid, ADATSA, TANF, GA-U) reduced, terminated or denied. The program advocates on behalf of clients with DSHS caseworkers, represents clients in administrative hearings and advises clients representing themselves. We also provide training covering state benefits to community service providers. There are two attorneys on staff, who are licensed in the state of Washington.

Client outreach is through food banks, shelters and other direct service programs. The intake process includes telephone screenings and in-person interviews, as needed.

• Washington State Bar Association's Access to Justice Network is an additional civil legal resource for low-income people.
• Northwest Justice Project can answer questions about public benefits programs in Washington State and other legal services in King County.
• LawforWA.org is an excellent source of free legal information on Washington State Law, offering easy access to information on the law, the courts, the government, and civic rights and responsibilities.
• Washington LawHelp is a website that helps low-income people find solutions to civil legal problems, including consumer law, elder law, housing rights, etc.
