Family Shelter provides both short-term (up to 4 weeks) and long-term (up to 3 months) emergency shelter for families with children under the age of 18. Shelter units are fully furnished apartments located in neighborhoods like Fremont, Magnolia, Queen Anne and Crown Hill, within walking distance of grocery stores and bus lines. They are safe, clean and in good repair. We help families stay connected to their schools, jobs and other support services when possible. Family Shelter serves single-parent and two-parent families. It can accommodate families with large numbers of children, including older teens.
Program clients receive intensive case management services including counseling, referrals to other needed resources, personal hygiene supplies and bus tickets. Our primary program goal is to help families find more permanent housing – or improve their chances of doing so – while in the program.
As part of our Family Shelter program, Bethlehem House provides extended shelter (up to 6 months) for families with children or single parent families in West Seattle, and houses large-sized families of seven or more who can not easily be accommodated in other emergency shelters. Families are provided with emergency resources, resource referrals, children’s services, food resources and assistance locating permanent housing.

Referral Process: Family Shelter can no longer accept direct referrals from families or providers. For a referral to the Family Shelter program at Solid Ground, you must complete an assessment through King County’s Coordinated Entry and Assessment system via Family Housing Connection. Family Housing Connection provides a single access point for shelter and housing resources. If you are pregnant or an adult with at least one child in your care and do not have a place to stay, schedule an appointment by calling 2.1.1 or 1.800.621.4636 to:

In-Kind Donations: Family Shelter's donation needs include:
- Twin & full sheet sets (fitted sheet & flat sheet) **
- Twin & full size comforters, quilts or blankets **
- Bath towels, hand towels & washcloths **
- Kitchen towels **
- Oven mitts & potholders
- Glasses & cups (no mugs)
- New mops & brooms
- Toilet paper
- Liquid dish soap
- Unscented laundry soap (often called "free & clear" or for "sensitive skin," etc.)
- New or gently used pots, pans & baking dishes
