Even before the City of Seattle took over ownership of Puget Sound Naval Station in 1993, Solid Ground played a leadership role (along with other agencies) in developing services for homeless people at Sand Point.
As a founding member of the Sand Point Community Housing Association, we helped convert six decommissioned Navy buildings into 94 housing units for homeless people. We’ve helped provide the case management and other services Sand Point residents need to achieve stability, security and confidence to improve their lives. Since 1999, more than 2,000 people have stayed at Sand Point in their journey from homelessness to stability.
Solid Ground owns all Sand Point Housing programs. In addition to Brettler Family Place, Family Housing and Santos Place described below, Sand Point Housing includes several youth programs: Friends of Youth New Ground, YouthCare Passages and YouthCare Pathways. Operation, management and support services for individual programs are provided by Solid Ground, YouthCare, Friends of Youth, and other community partners.
Solid Ground and all of our partners are committed to ending homelessness and helping families and individuals gain stability for their future by providing a safe and healthy community for people who would otherwise be homeless.
Brettler Family Place offers 51 permanent housing units for formerly homeless families with children under 18. Families receive onsite supportive case management services, resources and referrals. We offer classes for both children and adults focusing on employment, increasing education, English language skills, parenting and financial fitness.
As of January 1, 2012, the Brettler Family Place waitlist is temporarily closed and we will not accept any applications received after that date. We will notify providers when the list reopens.
When we reopen, we will accept waiting list applications from service providers only for client housing at Brettler Family Place. Providers who offer services specific to immigrant or refugee populations or people of color are encouraged to apply for their clients.
Family Housing offers 26 transitional housing units for families with children under 18 who are moving directly from homelessness. Families receive safe, secure housing with case management and support services for up to two years. During their stay, all residents work toward greater self-sufficiency, and adults strive to become employed or participate in educational or job training programs.
Santos Place offers 42 transitional housing units for single homeless men and women – including veterans – with three ADA-accessible units. Residents receive ongoing case management from referring agencies and a wide array of onsite support services, and they may stay for up to two years. Santos Place operates on a mutual housing model where residents take part in management and decision-making regarding their housing. (We accept referrals from the Salvation Army, Community Psychiatric Clinic, St. Vincent de Paul and Veterans Administration.)
In 2011, Solid Ground completed Stage 1 of our On Solid Ground at Sand Point Capital Campaign with the construction of Brettler Family Place and the Lowry Community Center – ending homelessness for 51 families, and creating the Lowry Community Center, a gathering space for classes, activities and community building. Stage 2 will include 20 additional permanent housing units for families, as well as 34 units for single men and women, including veterans, seniors and people living with disabilities.
The Capital Campaign helps fulfill Seattle’s ongoing vision to reuse the Sand Point Naval Station, providing permanent housing and support services for hardworking families and individuals overcoming homelessness.
