Homeless Prevention Programs

Solid Ground’s Homeless Prevention Programs work to educate and empower people with tools to solve problems that jeopardize housing.

Programs include:

1)
Tenant Services: Information and referrals provided on rights and responsibilities under local and state eviction statutes. Educational workshops
on landlord-tenant laws and other topics related to ensuring successful tenancies are available for groups, organizations or communities.

2) King County Housing Stability Project: One-time grants and loans for renters and homeowners in Seattle/King County at risk of eviction or foreclosure. 
To access this program: RENTERS should call King County 2-1-1 (also 206.461.3200, 1.800.621.4636 or 206.461.3610 for TTY/hearing assistance) for information, screening and referrals. HOMEOWNERS should call our Mortgage Counseling Client Hotline: 206.694.6766 or toll-free: 1.866.297.4300. 3) Mortgage Counseling Services: Information and assistance on rights and responsibilities in the foreclosure process, and assistance with budgeting and negotiating with lenders for households experiencing a housing crisis resulting in risk of foreclosure. We also offer reverse mortgage counseling for senior homeowners. Educational workshops on the foreclosure process and other topics related to ensuring successful homeownership are available for groups, organizations or communities.

4) Seattle Housing Stabilization Services: Support for renters in Seattle who are at imminent risk of housing loss. Staff assist with stabilizing housing based on each tenant’s goals and needs, which may include budgeting, securing health services, job training, benefits and other related needs.

5) Financial Fitness Boot Camp: One-to-one assistance for those interested in developing a household budget, controlling and eliminating debt, and developing healthy financial habits for long-term stability. Educational workshops on topics related to ensuring firm financial fitness through successful strategies are available for groups, organizations or communities.

6) Lifelong Housing Safety Net, a partnership with Lifelong AIDS Alliance and Solid Ground, provides support to households impacted by the foreclosure crisis who also have a family member living with a chronic illness.

Legal Resources, Advice & Services

  • Free Legal Information on Washington State Law: Information on the UW Law School website.
  • Community Information Line: Call 206.461.3200, toll free 1.877.211.9724 (WASH) or 2.1.1 (from a landline) – Monday through Friday, 9am - 6pm – for referrals to many types of legal resources (e.g. bankruptcy, predatory loan scams, etc.).
  • CLEAR is Washington State’s toll-free, centralized intake, advice and referral service for people with low incomes (outside King County) seeking free legal assistance with civil legal problems. Call 1.888.201.1014 weekdays, 9:15am - 12:15pm, and Tuesdays, 3:30 - 6:15pm.
  • Bankruptcy Information from the American Bar Association: Advantages, disadvantages and alternatives to bankruptcy.
  • Bankruptcy Law: An in-depth look at bankruptcy.

Credit Counseling Resources (Note: Credit counseling for debt consolidation must be done by accredited organizations; Solid Ground is not accredited for this service.)

  • Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutions: Contact: 800.634.2227. Provides counseling to individuals/couples concerned with financial decisions/issues regarding loans, etc., and management of credit cards/other financial resources.
  • Apprisen Financial Advocates (formerly Consumer Credit Counseling NW): Contact: 1.800.355.2227. Provides money management education, budgeting and comprehensive personal credit counseling.

Free Checking Accounts

  • Bank on Seattle/King County: Today, everybody can get a checking account and stop paying fees to cash checks. Even if you've had problems with an account in the past, have never had an account before, or don't have a Social Security number, you can open a bank or credit union account in Seattle and King County. Deposit your money for free and pay bills at no additional cost.
