WRC Member Quotes:
“Taking time to choose books with relevance to our student body is something I take seriously. For the month of February my 3rd grade group and I read books relating to Black History Month. During this time I noticed them positively engaging with the books we read. They are able to apply what they have learned from their reading to real life situations. They have told me about being able to engage in discussions in their classrooms about the importance of Black History Month and of the accomplishments of Black people. I have seen more confidence and enthusiasm from them than in previous months and my hope is to expand on their ability to connect what they read to their personal lives.”

“The WRC hosted our first 'Winter Wonderland' themed family literacy event in February for our students and their families. We tried to create a fun and interactive atmosphere of reading and learning for the whole family as well as to encourage more reading at home. Students and their families joined us for a day of delicious food, reading and literacy-based activities, resources for improving students' reading skills, raffle prizes and a free book giveaway for attending the event. Throughout the process of getting donations, we built partnerships with several community organizations and businesses that were happy to support Tukwila and our event. Also, we had a great turnout of community members to attend the event as guests and as volunteers! It was a great event for the Tukwila community.”

“In order to branch our services out to as many students as possible, we have started a morning reading club where students have the chance to read silently and with friends for 45 minutes before school. Unsure if students would be excited about the idea, we were greatly pleased to have an enormous success rate and attendance beyond our expectations. Even students who are usually intimidated by reading seem at ease and actively engaged the entire time, responding positively to the environment we provide. We are excited to see how the program evolves throughout the year as more students spread word of the club and additional students join in.”
