At Solid Ground we believe:
- Our community has the resources, will and ability to end poverty.
- All people have the right to food, shelter, social justice and opportunities.
- Racism perpetuates poverty. To end poverty we must undo racism.
- Together we can build a community free from poverty, prejudice and neglect, in which all members stand on solid ground with the skills and confidence needed to achieve their dreams.
For more than 30 years, Solid Ground has been recognized for its ability to respond to the needs of low-income and disadvantaged people in our community. As our Senior Advisor, and former Executive Director, Frank Chopp, said: “We see what needs to be done and just start doing it — it’s a constantly rejuvenating effort to fight poverty and injustice.”
We have a legacy of providing services that respond to basic needs — such as housing for homeless people and food access for the hungry.
And we have an unparalleled record of developing new services to meet emerging needs. In response to increased incidence of obesity among young people, we developed the Apple Corps, a school- and community-based nutrition and fitness program giving children and families tools and support to fight this epidemic. Other innovations, such as Community Voice Mail and Working Wheels, are model programs replicated in other communities.
We coordinate the largest number of AmeriCorps and VISTA programs in our community, providing more than 130 full-time staff to enable scores of other area organizations to carry out their missions.
Solid Ground’s political advocacy has been a cornerstone of efforts to create and expand Washington State’s Housing Trust Fund, expand the Basic Health Plan, save the state’s General Assistance-Unemployable (GAU) Program and other campaigns to help make our public policies more responsive to the real needs of people with lower incomes.
Together, our nearly 30 programs offer a coordinated, comprehensive approach to meeting the immediate needs of people living in poverty, providing the support, tools and services they need to achieve lasting stability and self-sufficiency.
